Duct Pipe

What are the pros and cons of PVC duct pipes?

Because of it sturdiness and durability the PVC is considered as a versatile material. Pipes made of PVC are used in variety of plumbing projects which also includes our HVAC duct work. Here, we will take a look into the advantages and disadvantages of using PVC in duct pipes.

Advantages of duct pipes-

Flexibility:

A PVC pipe has a variety of uses. This is on account of its toughness and user-friendly installation Duct pipes made of PVC can be fitted in ceilings, walls, or floors and they work well in circumstances where fire performance is a concern. The latter makes it especially suitable for duct work.

 Does not corrode

Corrosion is a major issue for conduits which often get exposed to moisture, fumes, or gases. The metallic pipes which are not resistant to corrosion get damaged over time. In such circumstances PVC pipe scan be used as they-are considered a good option for mitigating the risk. You can place your ducts under the house without running the risk of corrosion due to moisture or even radon. You save money with your PVC ducts by avoiding frequent replacements. These ducts will not rust, crack, chip, peel, or corrode. They can be enclosed in concrete and do not require any treatment for safeguard against the minerals and salts that are found in back fill. You can place them directly in contact with the soil. All you have to do is ensure that there is a proper drainage system so that there is no standing water.

These duct pipes are especially useful for homes which need to place duct pipes under the floor. If your house does not have crawl space to make space for metallic ducts you ha veto opt for PVC ducts. If the house is built on concrete slabs, PVC pipe is a suitable option as air duct. They can be placed directly under the floor.

Good Insulation

Insulation is a prime factor for smooth and efficient functioning of a HVAC unit. The hot or cold air produced by the unit should not get dispersed or leaked out of the conduits through which they pass. We all know that plastic is a better insulator of heat than metals. Metals, given their property, are good conductors of heat but not insulators. They cannot hold heat for long. In buildings where the duct work is quite long, PVC pipes are more suitable than metallic pipes. The air running through the metallic pipes will lose most of its coolness and heat by the time it reaches the rooms. This will not be the case for PVC which is a good insulator. They will not allow the heat to go away.

 Disadvantages of PVC Duct Pipes

Cannot withstand high temperature

PVC pipes can be used to carry cold air throughout the day but it has a certain limit for carrying heat. It cannot withstand temperature beyond 140°F. This limits its usability where the temperature is expected to go at the extremes. However a solution has been found to this problem. CPVC, chlorinated-poly-vinyl-chloride is manufactured by an extra chlorine atom to PVC molecule. CPVC can withstand high temperature up to 180 degrees. It is rigid and cream-colored. This is a perfect choice for hot and cold supply pipes.

 High manufacturing cost

The cost of manufacturing PVC pipes is more than that of metallic pipes. However, in smaller buildings where the length of duct will not be much, it will not be an issue. But in bigger buildings the difference in manufacturing cost will loom large.Although the cost of buying PVC duct is a bit high, it will be offset the investment by low maintenance cost and good energy efficiency rate.

Bulky

The metal ducts are lighter and thin compared to PVC pipes. Its weight can be almost double to that of metallic pipe. This makes it quite messy when these pipes are to be mounted on ceiling.

Upgrading with metallic parts in future will not be possible

This should be kept in mind when buying and installing metallic duct types. Metal duct product sand PVC duct products are not sustainable to each other. They are not available in the same shapes and sizes. This can surface as a big issue in future when you think of upgrading and maintenance. However, custom metal duct shapes are easier to manufacture than PVC. The latter has to be specially ordered from a manufacturer.

The need for HVAC differs from building to building. It depends on energy efficiency, suitability, and cost. Your selection of duct material will depend on these factors. The pros and cons of PVC duct pipes will let you decide whether the material will suit you needs or not.
